The start of a new year is when many are taking stock of how their career is progressing and setting professional goals for the coming year.

Women especially may be thinking about compensation and how they can narrow the gender pay gap, career coaches say.

“You have to find the courage to ask,” says Marianne Ruggiero, founder of Optima Careers in this Secrets of Wealthy Women podcast with Veronica Dagher.

There are several easy things one can do to start. Befriend your company’s human-resources representatives to get a sense of the pay range for your job function within the organization, speak to recruiters to further gauge the market and find a sponsor who can advocate for you, she says.

Rita Kakati-Shah, a career coach and founder of Uma, says women can also level up their careers by expanding their networks and building new skills that will help them land a promotion.
